Spent nuclear fuel

After a limited time of storage in cooling pools at the nuclear reactor sites, the spent fuel is transported to Clab, the central interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel in Oskarshamn. There, the fuel is stored for 30-40 years. Only then, has radioactivity and heat emission diminished to the extent that the encapsulated fuel can be moved to the planned final repository. Spent nuclear fuel has been placed in Clab since the middle of the 1980s.

Low and intermediate-level radioactive waste

In Forsmark, SKB has constructed a final repository for low and intermediate-level radioactive waste. It is named SFR, the final repository for short-lived radioactive waste.

Test laboratories

In the municipality of Oskarshamn, SKB has constructed the ÄSPÖ Hard Rock Laboratory. Here, SKB tests equipment and methods for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. In Oskarshamn, there is also a canister laboratory where SKB develops methods for sealing and non-destructive testing.
