Spent nuclear fuel

After a limited period of storage in cooling pools at the nuclear reactor sites, spent fuel is transported to Clab, the central interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel in Oskarshamn. The fuel is stored at Clab for 30–40 years. Only then have radioactivity and heat emission diminished to an extent allowing the encapsulated fuel to be moved to the planned final repository. Spent nuclear fuel has been stored at Clab since the mid-1980s.

Low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste

SKB has constructed a final repository for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste in Forsmark. It is named 'SFR' and is the final repository for short-lived radioactive waste.

Test laboratories

SKB has constructed the ÄSPÖ Hard Rock Laboratory in the municipality of Oskarshamn. Here, SKB tests equipment and methods for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. Oskarshamn is also the location of a canister laboratory where SKB develops methods for sealing and non-destructive testing.
