Responsibility and financing

Who is responsible for the repository?

SKB is owned by the nuclear power industry and is responsible for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel. SSM’s responsibility is to ascertain that the method for this disposal is safe. SKB’s responsibility is regulated in the Nuclear Activities Act. After closure of the repository, one prerequisite is that neither maintenance nor supervision is to be necessary.

Who finances repositories?

The price that consumers pay for electricity derived from nuclear power includes a fee of approximately 1 öre (0.01 Swedish Krona) per kWh of electricity supplied. This fee is to be used for the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear power plants as well as the construction of final repositories. These fees are paid to the Nuclear Waste Fund, which is managed under governmental control. This financing scheme is regulated by the Act on Financing of Residual Products from Nuclear Activities.
