New wide call to strengthen research in nuclear power, waste management, radiation protection and nuclear non-proliferation
The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority is launching a wide research call covering four areas within radiation safety, including skills supply, nuclear non-proliferation, and the final disposal of nuclear waste. In total, the authority plans to allocate SEK 81 million for research during the period 2026–2031. International institutions are also eligible to apply for funding from one of the sources. The deadline for applications is 21 April 2026.
Each year, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) announces research funding within its research areas in order to contribute to knowledge development and the supply of expertise that supports the authority’s mission.
The 2026 call covers four areas: skills supply related to new nuclear power, radiation safety and nuclear non-proliferation within existing nuclear power, the management and final disposal of nuclear waste, and other radiation safety issues, such as radiation protection in emergency preparedness and in healthcare.
The funding may support doctoral projects, postdoctoral projects, and research assignments at Swedish universities, research institutes, and companies. International universities, research institutes, and companies are also eligible to apply for funding from funding source 3.
“By funding relevant research, knowledge can be generated that forms the basis for well-informed decisions in our areas of responsibility, including emergency preparedness, regulation, supervision, and licensing. At the same time, we help strengthen expertise in radiation safety in Sweden,” says Cheuk Lau, Acting Research Manager, at the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.
Applications may be written in Swedish or English. Projects may start in 2026 or 2027 and must submit their final report no later than 30 September in the final year of the project.
