  • 2019:26 Analysis of trends in brain tumour incidence in Sweden

SSM perspective Background In the past few years, a discussion has been ongoing in both the research community and the media as to whether exposure to radiowaves from the use of mobile phones has an impact on the incidence of brain tumours in the general population. Ever since the introduction of mobile phones in the 1980s, their use has increased dramatically and has now spread to almost all...

  • 2019:27 Effect of residual stress on ductile fracture at low primary loads – Numerical study

SSM perspective Background Present report is a continuation of earlier work reported in SSM2009:27 regarding an analysis strategy for fracture assessment of defects in ductile material and SSM2011:19 on the influence from residual stresses on crack initiation and ductile crack growth at high primary loads. The Swedish procedure for safety assessment of components with defects is documented in...

  • 2019:23 Participation in the European Committee for Standardization's workshop regarding civil structures

SSM perspective Background During the period 2014-2018, a CEN1 workshop (Phase 2 Prospective Group 3 civil works) have been carried out. The aim of the workshop is to provide a base founded on the French standard in order to be able to establish a possible future European standard for the design of civil structures at nuclear power plants. The workshop has identied which additional...

  • 2019:20 Assessment of structures subject to concrete pathologies (ASCET), phase 3

SSM perspective Background ASCET is an international research project initiated by WGIAGE1 OECD2 / NEA3. WGIAGE Concrete subgroup is a working group within the OECD / NEA whose task is to address issues concerning the maintenance of the integrity of concrete structures, proposals for general principles to optimally handle the challenges of integrity, especially with regard to ageing of...

  • 2019:15 3D Thermo-Mechanical Coupled Modelling of Thermo-Seismic Response of a Fractured Rock Mass related to the Final Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel and Nuclear Waste in Hard Rock

SSM perspective Background When assessing the long-term safety of a repository for spent nuclear fuel it is important to consider future earthquakes. Previous studies by Yoon et al. (2014, SSM Report 2014:59) and (2016, SSM Report 2016:23) investigated the fracture responses due to heat and earthquakes at major deformation zones using a 2D thermo-mechanical coupled model that uses a Particle...

  • 2019:14 IAEA Safeguards: Staying Ahead of the Game

SSM perspective Background The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) called for research proposals relating to non-proliferation. This call resulted in SSM accepting a proposal from the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) on “Improving IAEA Safeguards for Non-Proliferation and Disarmament: Assessing the Options for, and Feasibility of, Further Strengthening...

  • 2019:08 Recent Research on EMF and Health Risk, Thirteenth report from SSM’s Scientific Council on Electromagnetic Fields, 2018

SSM perspective Background The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority’s (SSM) Scientific Council on Electromagnetic Fields monitors current research on potential health risks with a correlation to exposure to electromagnetic fields and provides the Authority with advice on assessing possible health risks. The Council gives guidance when the Authority must give an opinion on policy matters when...

  • 2019:06 The Changing Landscape of Non-proliferation and the EU

Background Maintaining competence and knowledge within the nuclear non-proliferation area is a necessity for Sweden to keep its international commitments of peaceful use of all nuclear material. As part of this work the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) made a call for research proposals related to Non-Proliferation for projects focused on the interplay between national and...

  • 2019:04 Dosimetry in environments surrounding a laser-plasma accelerator

SSM perspective Background Modern laser technology makes it possible to generate ultrashort pulses with a very high peak power. At the Lund Laser Centre, a high-power laser facility in Lund, Sweden, laser pulses having a duration of approximately 30 femtoseconds are generated with a maximum peak power of up to 40 terawatts. When these pulses are focused, extreme light intensity is achieved.

  • 2019:03 Evaluation of the hydrodynamic model in PARET/ANL

Background The fuel rod analysis program SCANAIR has been developed by IRSN (Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire) for analysis of reactivity initiated accidents (RIA) in light water reactors. The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) has access to SCANAIR in exchange for annual contributions for its further development. This ensures a possibility for SSM to do...
