Notification of radon in the workplace

This page contains information applying to operations taking place in an environment with high levels of radon. You can find information about when workplaces have a notification obligation and how to notify us here.

If your workplace is on a site where radon levels exceed the reference level after measures have been taken, your workplace is subject to a notification obligation. The following operations are subject to a radon notification obligation:

  • Pursuant to Section 4 of Swedish Radiation Safety Authority Regulations (SSMFS 2018:10) concerning Radon in the Workplace, notification must be given of any workplace with a radon level above the reference level of 200 Bq/m³.
  • Pursuant to Section 5 of SSMFS 2018:10, notification must be given of any workplace in which employees risk an annual radon exposure exceeding 0.72 MBqh/m³.

As an employer, you have a duty to be aware of the radon levels in your workplace. To establish this, you need to take measurements. This requirement applies to all workplaces, from offices to mines.

How to register your operation

  1. Log in to our e-service using your Freja eID or BankID.
  2. Select the type of operation you wish to register.
  3. Provide the following details:
    1. Invoicing address
    2. Invoice reference
    3. Preferred means of invoicing
    4. Contact details for someone who can answer any questions
    5. The make, model and serial number of the equipment (the serial number can be registered at a later date).
    6. Any supplier information
    7. Address where the operation is carried out
  4. You also need to supply the following information:
    1. Type of operation, for example, office, mine, waterworks, etc.
    2. The location of the workplace, i.e., whether above ground, subterranean or in a completed rock shelter.
    3. Whether the operation is mobile.
    4. The highest measured or estimated level of radon.
    5. The type of measurements taken (you can attach measurement protocols).
    6. Highest estimated radon exposure.
    7. Number of people working in a radon level above the reference level.
    8. Whether there is a risk that people will be exposed to radon levels above 0.72 MBqh/m³ and, if so, how many people.

When you have signed your notification, a confirmation will be sent to your email address. This means that your notification has been approved. Save this confirmation as it is only generated once when you register.

Power of attorney for representatives

You have automatic authorisation to log in to the e-service if you are an authorised signatory, CEO or director of the company. If the signatures of multiple directors are required, you will need power of attorney to log in. Power of attorney is also required if someone other than an authorised signatory or CEO is representing the organisation. Power of attorney is also required for sole traders, limited partnerships, economic associations, publicly owned companies and public authorities.

You can apply for power of attorney in two ways:

  1. The authorised signatory or CEO can log in and delegate authority to represent the organisation. The representative must then log in and approve the information in the e-service.
  2. The representative can log in directly to the e-service and enter and send their details.

In both cases, documentation of delegation must be attached and signed and approved by the authorised signatory or CEO. This must state the name and job title of the delegator and the name and personal identity number of the delegatee.

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority will check the information and a case officer from the authority must approve power of attorney. A confirmation document will be emailed to the representative once power of attorney has been approved.

Fees

The notification fee for operations conducted in a radon level above the reference level of 200 Bq/m³ (i.e., notification pursuant to Section 4 of SSMFS 2018:10) is SEK 3,700. Notification is valid for 10 years.

For workplaces in which employees risk an annual radon exposure exceeding 0.72 MBqh/m3 (i.e., notification pursuant to Section 5 of SSMFS 2018:10) there is an annual notification fee of SEK 35,000. Your notification is valid for five years.

When you decommission your operation

If you no longer conduct an operation registered with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, you can deregister by emailing us at Tillstandsprovning-stralskydd@ssm.se. Please state the registration number.

Notification obligation for radon

There are two types of notification for radon in the workplace. One is for workplaces with a radon level above the reference level of 200 Bq/m³, as regulated in Section 4 of SSMFS 2018:10. This notification obligation rests with those who deploy personnel to perform the operation, usually the employer. Notification applies only to your own personnel. If there are multiple companies in the workplace, each must submit its own notification.

The other type of notification applies to workplaces in which employees risk an annual radon exposure exceeding 0.72 MBqh/m3, as regulated in Section 5 of SSMFS 2018:10. This notification obligation rests with whoever has control of the premises in which the workplace is situated, usually the property owner. This notification covers employees, consultants, contractors and anyone else working on site, meaning that only one notification is required for the entire workplace. Workplaces commonly covered by this type of notification obligation include mines, tunnels, waterworks or other similar sites that involve working underground.
