Notification of radon in the workplace
This page contains information applying to operations taking place in an environment with high levels of radon. You can find information about when workplaces have a notification obligation and how to notify us here.
If your workplace is on a site where radon levels exceed the reference level after measures have been taken, your workplace is subject to a notification obligation. The following operations are subject to a radon notification obligation:
- Pursuant to Section 4 of Swedish Radiation Safety Authority Regulations (SSMFS 2018:10) concerning Radon in the Workplace, notification must be given of any workplace with a radon level above the reference level of 200 Bq/m³.
- Pursuant to Section 5 of SSMFS 2018:10, notification must be given of any workplace in which employees risk an annual radon exposure exceeding 0.72 MBqh/m³.
As an employer, you have a duty to be aware of the radon levels in your workplace. To establish this, you need to take measurements. This requirement applies to all workplaces, from offices to mines.
Notification obligation for radon
There are two types of notification for radon in the workplace. One is for workplaces with a radon level above the reference level of 200 Bq/m³, as regulated in Section 4 of SSMFS 2018:10. This notification obligation rests with those who deploy personnel to perform the operation, usually the employer. Notification applies only to your own personnel. If there are multiple companies in the workplace, each must submit its own notification.
The other type of notification applies to workplaces in which employees risk an annual radon exposure exceeding 0.72 MBqh/m3, as regulated in Section 5 of SSMFS 2018:10. This notification obligation rests with whoever has control of the premises in which the workplace is situated, usually the property owner. This notification covers employees, consultants, contractors and anyone else working on site, meaning that only one notification is required for the entire workplace. Workplaces commonly covered by this type of notification obligation include mines, tunnels, waterworks or other similar sites that involve working underground.
