Report on dismantling of nuclear reactors submitted to the Swedish Government
According to Article 37 of the Euratom Treaty, member states are for example required to provide information to the European Commission when nuclear reactors are to be dismantled and demolished. In order to meet the requirements, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has submitted a report to the Government of Sweden regarding dismantling of the reactors Oskarshamn 1 and 2.
In order for the European Commission to be made aware of any potential impact on the environment in the member states, Article 37 of the Euratom Treaty stipulates that member states must, for example, provide general data to the Commission on dismantling and demolition of nuclear reactors. For this reason, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has, based on documentation from OKG, finalised a report on dismantling of Oskarshamn 1 and 2. Their dismantling is not anticipated to have more than a negligible impact.
"It is not likely that Sweden or any other member state will be affected, as indicated by the report," says Ernesto Fumero, an analyst at the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.
The report has been submitted to the Swedish Government, which in turn will forward it to the European Commission.
