  • 2015:16 International conference on UV radiation-induced disease – roles of UVA and UVB

In 2007, an international conference sponsored by the former Swedish Radiation Protection Authority and the Swedish Cancer Society and held at Karolinska Insti- tutet explored the state of knowledge concerning ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced disease and the roles of UVA and UVB. The following five years we have seen the classification of the whole solar UV spectrum by IARC as carcinogenic...

  • 2015:19 Recent Research on EMF and Health Risk - Tenth report from SSM’s Scientific Council on Electromagnetic Fields, 2015

The objective of the report is to cover the previous year’s research in the area of electromagnetic fields (EMF). The report gives the Authority an overview and provides an important basis for risk assessment. The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority’s (SSM) scientific council monitors the current research situation and provides the Authority with advice on the assessment of risks,...

  • 2014:51 Report from SSM’s scientific council on ionizing radiation within oncology, 2013. MR in radiotherapy - an important step towards personalised treatment?

Imaging is important for radiotherapy and the development of new imaging modalities is closely linked to the evolution of modern radiotherapy. The implementation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in modern radiotherapy holds great promise for the future but the scientific council emphasizes that it must be carefully monitored in order to minimize the introduction of new risks, violating...

  • 2014:26 Improved reference and relative dosimetry of small radiation therapy photon beams

Data tables on detector corrections for beam output measurements are provided for a large number of detectors (small air and liquid ionization chambers, silicon diodes, TLD and alanine) manufactured by major vendors, for 6 MV photons from clinical accelerators and for two Leksell Gamma Knife® models. They have been calculated with the PENELOPE Monte Carlo system at an uncertainty of 0.1%.

  • 2014:16 Recent Research on EMF and Health Risk, Ninth report from SSM’s Scientific Council on Electromagnetic Fields, 2014

The objective of the report is to cover the previous year’s research in the area of electromagnetic fields (EMF). The report gives the Authority an overview and provides an important basis for risk assessment. The present annual report is number nine in the series and covers studies published up to and including September 2013. It covers different areas of EMF (static, low frequency...

  • 2014:03 Report from SSM’s scientific council on ionizing radiation within oncology, 2012

In this report, a finalized version of a radiotherapy protocol template for external beam radiotherapy is presented. The focus is on procedural aspects, while issues regarding clinical evaluation during and after treatment are not dealt with. The use of this radiotherapy template is encouraged for structured description of contemporary radiotherapy in care programs and clinical trial...

  • 2013:31 Aesthetic ultrasound devices – current state of knowledge and suggested measurement set-up for characterization of exposure

This report concerns the ultrasound devices used for the aesthetic purposes of body contouring and fat reduction (ablation of adipose tissue). Such devices have recently become more frequent on the Swedish market. These ultrasound devices are currently not medically regulated in Sweden and little is known about their safety and potentially harmful exposure when using them. This report aims to...

  • 2013:30 Laser pointers and Eye injuries - An analysis of reported cases

The safety limits that exist for human exposure of laser radiation are essential to reduce the risk of injuries. These values, however, give very little information on what tissue damages that may be expected at various elevated exposure levels. Similarly, the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority (SSM) has very little information on how such tissue damage is related to the impairment of the...

  • 2012:23e Integrated assessment of radiation safety in health and medical services

The county councils do not meet the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority’s requirements in terms of radiation safety. This implies that their health and medical services have deficiencies in this area that could lead to serious consequences for patients and staff, a conclusion based on the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority’s compilation of information from the nine county councils that...
