  • 2017:13 Monte Carlo patient-specific pre-treatment QA system for volumetric modulated arc therapy

Background The clinical use of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) has augmented rapidly since it became commercially available. As a result, the need for comprehensive quality assurance (QA) has increased. Current practices in Sweden normally compare the delivered dose with the planned dose based on measurements with different methods, for instance: portal dosimetry, point dose...

  • 2015:53 Ductile tearing – Micromechanical analyses and experimental study

In this report, the project "Ductile Tearing-Micromechanical analyses and experimental study" is presented. In the project, numerical cell modeling has been conducted using the shear modified Gurson model proposed by Nahshon and Hutchinson to evaluate its capability in predicting the effect of residual stresses. Experimental work has also been conducted for material characterization.

  • 2014:57 Technical Note, Issues in the Corrosion of Copper in a Swedish High Level Nuclear Waste Repository: Phase III. Role of Sulphide Ion in Anodic and Cathodic Processes

The most important findings of this research project show that: In the case when the bentonite buffer between the copper canister and the granitic rock is not damaged, we can neglect the possibility of general corrosion damage being a threat to canister integrity over a 100,000 year storage period. However, if the bentonite buffer is damaged for any reason, and does not act as an engineered...

  • 2018:13 Prestudy - Detectors for variance measurements

Background The understanding of radiation quality requires knowledge about the energy deposition pattern of ionizing radiation on which models for cellular and sub-cellular damage can be built. Experimental data is fundamental in this context for quality assurance and bench-marking of models and simulations. Direct measurements are also of practical importance for radiation quality...

  • 2014:50 Technical Note, A Study of Availability of Fuel Data for Sweden’s Spent Nuclear Fuel

The study covers all types spent fuel planned to be placed in the final repository. It was carried out by selecting a sample of spent fuel and investigating the information available at the Nuclear Power Plants (NPP’s) in Sweden, the Central interim storage facility (Clab) and Studsvik. The results indicate that the required data is available and can be obtained for fuel unloaded after 1980.

  • 2014:48 Technical Note, Independent assessment of groundwater sulphide content in the long-te

Groundwater sulphide content is a key factor in the determination of canister lifetimes because of its role in corrosion of copper. SKB has based the canister lifetime analysis on a distribution of measured sulphide concentrations which are assumed to apply throughout the long-term analysis period. The distribution is based on expert judgement in the selection of samples that are regarded as...

  • 2018:19 Licensing of safety critical software for nuclear reactors

Background This report is the 7th revision of the report. The task force was formed in 1994 as a group of experts on safety critical software. The members come from regulatory authorities and/or their technical support organization. The report, without the SSM cover and this page, will be published by or available at the websites of the other participating organizations. Effect on SSM...

  • 2018:25 UO2 fuel oxidation and fission gas release

Background The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) follows the research on fuel performance closely. One aspect that has been the main question of several research projects is the fragmentation of fuel pellets during abnormal heat up. In this project the oxidation of UO2 is scrutinized and its effect on pellet fragmentation, fission gas release and damage of fuel rods has been...

  • 2014:41 Technical Note, Review of Radionuclide Abstraction and Selection in the SKB Safety Case -Main Review Phase

As part of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) review of the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) SR-Site safety assessment for a spent nuclear fuel repository in Sweden, this technical note documents the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses (CNWRA®) review of the abstraction and selection of radionuclides in the SKB safety case. Specifically, CNWRA...
