Radon at work – your responsibilities as an employer

Radon is a radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. In Sweden, employers must ensure that radon levels at the workplace are below the reference level and that workers are not exposed to high levels of radon.

What you need to do

  • Measure radon during the heating season in Sweden (Oct–Apr)
  • Take action if levels are above the reference level 200 Bq/m³
  • Notify the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority if levels remain high after mitigation

Extra reporting

If a worker’s annual exposure is very high (above 0.72 MBq·h/m³), a special notification is required – usually by the property owner.

Who must notify?

  • Radon levels above 200 Bq/m³: Each employer
  • High radon exposure: Property owner or main operator
